NFL news dominates the Top 5

sports-blog-index-logo12Every Monday through Thursday, Buzz Manager Blog reports the Top 5 Topics discussed by the most influential sports blogs, as rated by  Sports Media Challenge’s Sports Blog Index.

Over the past 24 hours, the NFL accounted for all of the top five topics among the top sports blogs. The most popular topic was last night’s Monday Night Football game between the Bears and the Packers, with bloggers discussing the frigid weather conditions and the Bears’ overtime win. Video of Jets DE Shaun Ellis throwing a snowball at some Seattle fans Sunday quickly made the rounds of the blogs. Bloggers cheered on Ellis for retaliating against the fans throwing snowballs at Jets players as they left the field. The conflict between Lions coach Rod Marinelli and Detroit News columnist Rob Parker remained highly discussed, with the majority of bloggers taking Marinelli’s side. The NFL playoffs were a hot topic as bloggers analyzed and predicted various playoff scenarios. Rounding out the top five was a rumor about Browns DE Shaun Smith punching teammate QB Brady Quinn during an argument in the locker room.

Will Jessica Simpson’s trash talk curse the Cowboys? Bloggers wonder….

Over the past 24 hours, singer Jessica Simpson’s comments on Good Morning America that the Dallas Cowboys are going to kick the Philadelphia Eagles’ butt in Monday’s game stirred up conversation among bloggers with many believing that Simpson, girlfriend of Cowboys QB Tony Romo, would be further villified by Cowboys fan should they lose to the Eagles. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim winning the AL West and clinching a spot in the playoffs was a popular topic among bloggers, particularly their joyous post-game celebration. Concerns about Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young’s mental state continued to be a popular topic.Bloggers were also concerned by news that the New York Giants and Jets are in stadium naming rights negotiations with Allianz, a Munich-based insurance and financial services company with several business connections to Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. Rounding out the Top 5 was former NFL-er Warren Sapp’s comments while promoting Showtime’s ‘Inside The NFL’ on which he is an analyst. Sapp referred to Univ. of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer as a “classless dirtbag” for kicking a field goal in the final seconds of UF’s 26-3 win over Miami and stated that the Oakland Raiders are “going to suck.”


Brett Favre inducted into the Hall of Fame…. of the Top 5 Topics.

To no one’s surprise, the trade of Brett Favre to the NY Jets dominated sports blogs over the past 24 hours. The Olympics discussion increased, with topics including the American cyclists being forced to apologize for arriving in Beijing wearing masks to protect against pollution, the opening ceremonies, the U.S. women’s soccer team’s early loss to Norway, and NBC’s plans for coverage. Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain’s shoulder injury and move to the DL was also a popular topic. Other hot topics were the announcement of the 2008-09 NBA schedule (specifically an error showing teams playing away at Seattle, but home versus Oklahoma City- whoops!) and former University of Toledo basketball player Sammy Villegas being accused of point shaving during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons.
