NFL news dominates the Top 5

sports-blog-index-logo12Every Monday through Thursday, Buzz Manager Blog reports the Top 5 Topics discussed by the most influential sports blogs, as rated by  Sports Media Challenge’s Sports Blog Index.

Over the past 24 hours, the NFL accounted for all of the top five topics among the top sports blogs. The most popular topic was last night’s Monday Night Football game between the Bears and the Packers, with bloggers discussing the frigid weather conditions and the Bears’ overtime win. Video of Jets DE Shaun Ellis throwing a snowball at some Seattle fans Sunday quickly made the rounds of the blogs. Bloggers cheered on Ellis for retaliating against the fans throwing snowballs at Jets players as they left the field. The conflict between Lions coach Rod Marinelli and Detroit News columnist Rob Parker remained highly discussed, with the majority of bloggers taking Marinelli’s side. The NFL playoffs were a hot topic as bloggers analyzed and predicted various playoff scenarios. Rounding out the top five was a rumor about Browns DE Shaun Smith punching teammate QB Brady Quinn during an argument in the locker room.

MNF overtakes Plaxico Burress…. sort of.

Over the past 24 hours, Monday Night Football was the most popular topic, though as much for the halftime interview with agent Drew Rosenhaus (who represents Giants WR Plaxico Burress, among others) as for Houston’s win over Jacksonville. Burress facing gun charges remained a popular topic, with many wondering whether Burress will end up serving jail time. News that the student who serves as Penn State’s Nittany Lion mascot was charged with DUI Saturday was an area of amusement for bloggers. Debate and speculation surrounding Notre Dame head football coach Charlie Weis’ future continued to grow. Rounding out the Top 5 was cyclist Lance Armstrong’s announcement that he will compete in the 2009 Tour de France race.

Monday Night Football, Drew Brees take top spot

Over the past 24 hours, the Saints’ Monday Night Football win over the Packers was the most popular topic among the most influential sports blogs, particularly the strong performance of Saints QB Drew Brees. News that Tiger Woods and General Motors/Buick are ending their sponsorship agreement due to GM’s financial troubles was also highly discussed. Another popular topic was the Washington Wizards firing head coach Eddie Jordan after a poor start to the season. Eagles QB Donovan McNabb being benched Sunday, then being named the starter for this Thursday‘s game versus the Cardinals, remained in the Top 5. Rounding out the Top 5 was discussion surrounding the Pittsburgh Pirates signing two young pitchers from India, Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel.

Mark Cuban charged with insider trading steals bloggers’ attention

Over the past 24 hours, the Securities and Exchange Commission filing a civil lawsuit against Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban for insider trading was the most popular topic among the top sports blogs. The Cleveland Browns’ Monday Night Football win over the Buffalo Bills was also highly discussed. Discussion about President-elect Barack Obama’s desire for a college football playoff continued to be a popular topic. Eagles QB Donovan McNabb also stayed in the Top 5 as bloggers continued to poke fun at his comments that he did not know an NFL game could end in a tie. Rounding out the Top 5 was news that The New York Times quarterly sports magazine, Play, is folding.

Blaming the officials will usually get you in the Top 5…

Over the past 24 hours, Monday Night Football remained as the most popular topic, though focus shifted to comments from 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz blaming the officials for their loss to the Cardinals, saying the review of a play and subsequent change in the spot of the ball were not handled clearly by the officials, causing confusion on the 49ers sideline. Also popular was discussion about the NBA’s two unbeaten teams: the Lakers and, more surprising, the Hawks, marked by the Hawks win over the Bulls Tuesday. The various MLB player awards were also highly discussed, especially debate over whether Giants P Tim Lincecum was the right choice for the NL Cy Young award. ‘American Gladiator’ and former EliteXC MMA fighter Gina Carano caught bloggers’ attention due to the spread of undated photos of Carano partying with fellow former EliteXC fighter Tonya Evinger. Rounding out the Top 5 was Dylan Favre, a high school QB that just set the Mississippi state record for single season touchdown passes, who happens to have a famous uncle, Jets QB Brett Favre.

MNF was lackluster, but still most popular topic

Over the past 24 hours, Monday Night Football was the most popular topic among the most influential sports blogs, with many discussing the lackluster match-up and play of the Cardinals and 49ers. The trade of Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday to the Oakland A’s was also highly discussed. Another hot topic was an incident following Saturday’s LSU-Alabama game that resulted in the deaths of two people. An Alabama fan reportedly shot two acquaintances (LSU fans) to death during an argument about the game. Whether or not head football coach Charlie Weis is on the hot seat at Notre Dame was also a popular topic. Rounding out the top 5 was discussion about Ashley Stewart, a woman allegedly involved in an altercation with Larry Johnson last month, filing a lawsuit against the Chiefs RB.

Big trade deal featuring Allen Iverson and Chauncey Billups tops the blogs

Over the past 24 hours, news that the Denver Nuggets are trading Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess, and Cheikh Samb surprised many bloggers, making it the most discussed topic. Also highly discussed was Chris Berman’s interviews of Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama during ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast. The University of Tennessee firing head football coach Phillip Fulmer was also a popular topic, though many bloggers expressed that they were not surprised. Texas Tech’s win over Texas continued to be a popular topic, especially Michael Crabtree’s game-changing touchdown play and some people being sold counterfeit tickets outside the stadium. Rounding out the Top 5 was the Steelers’ Monday Night Football win over the Redskins. Bloggers talked about MNF in relation to the presidential election superstition that if the Redskins win their last home game before the election, the incumbent party wins the election, meaning that if the superstition holds true in line with the Redskins’ loss, Barack Obama will win the election.
