NFL news dominates the Top 5

sports-blog-index-logo12Every Monday through Thursday, Buzz Manager Blog reports the Top 5 Topics discussed by the most influential sports blogs, as rated by  Sports Media Challenge’s Sports Blog Index.

Over the past 24 hours, the NFL accounted for all of the top five topics among the top sports blogs. The most popular topic was last night’s Monday Night Football game between the Bears and the Packers, with bloggers discussing the frigid weather conditions and the Bears’ overtime win. Video of Jets DE Shaun Ellis throwing a snowball at some Seattle fans Sunday quickly made the rounds of the blogs. Bloggers cheered on Ellis for retaliating against the fans throwing snowballs at Jets players as they left the field. The conflict between Lions coach Rod Marinelli and Detroit News columnist Rob Parker remained highly discussed, with the majority of bloggers taking Marinelli’s side. The NFL playoffs were a hot topic as bloggers analyzed and predicted various playoff scenarios. Rounding out the top five was a rumor about Browns DE Shaun Smith punching teammate QB Brady Quinn during an argument in the locker room.

Over the past 24 hours, rumors that pitcher CC Sabathia has accepted an offer from the New York Yankees was the most popular topic among the top sports blogs. Also popular was Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis’ appearance on a radio show criticizing coach Jim Zorn’s decision-making. Detroit Lions C Dominic Raiola’s comments regarding Lions fans’ negative attitudes towards the team were also highly discussed. News that Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich allegedly attempted to inappropriately influence the Tribune Company with the sale of the Chicago Cubs caught bloggers’ attention. Rounding out the top five was recently-fired head coach Barry Melrose’s comments that he hopes the Tampa Bay Lightning do not win another game all season.

Rays headed to World Series is talk of the blogs

Over the weekend, the Tampa Bay Rays’ Game 7 win over the Red Sox to advance to the World Series was the most popular topic. Also highly discussed were various NFL topics, including rumors that former Green Bay QB Brett Favre advised the Detroit Lions before their game vs. the Packers, the Cowboys’ loss to the Rams, and the Colts’ loss to the Packers. Discussion of the weekend’s college football games was also popular. The Texas Longhorns’ win over Missouri to hold onto their #1 ranking and the first BCS rankings were hot college football topics as well as a video that popped up on many blogs from the South Carolina-LSU game in which a referee ran into SC QB Stephen Garcia, with many bloggers speculating (some jokingly), that the referee appeared to hit Garcia on purpose. News that N.Y. Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain was arrested for DUI in Nebraska quickly circulated throughout the blog world to move into the Top 5. Rounding out the Top 5 was discussion surrounding ESPN analyst Lou Holtz’s comments about Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez in which he made an ill-advised comparison to Hitler.


Rays vs. Sox takes top spot, Manny and the NLCS not far behind

Over the weekend the most popular topic was the ALCS between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays, with many hoping the Rays keep their historical playoff run going. Close behind was the NLCS between the L.A. Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies with a lot of the conversation centering on Dodgers LF Manny Ramirez. College football was also highly discussed, especially the much anticipated match-ups of Oklahoma vs. Texas and LSU vs. Florida. NFL discussion was popular after the Atlanta Falcons’ win over the Chicago Bears, back-up Detroit QB Dan Orlovsky’s end zone mistake that led to a safety, and the Dallas Cowboys losing to the Arizona Cardinals. Rounding out the Top 5 was discussion about Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s appearance at a Philadelphia Flyers game for a ceremonial first puck drop where she was greeted with boos from the crowd. Most bloggers thought the mix of politics with sports was a poor decision by the Flyers organization.
