Bloggers keep pace with NFL firings

Over the past 24 hours, the firings of various NFL coaches was the most popular topic among the top sports blogs, in particular the firing of NY Jets coach Eric Mangini. The woes of the Dallas Cowboys continued to be a popular topic, especially from bloggers alarmed by comments from ESPN’s Cris Carter on WR Terrell Owens that if Carter ran the Cowboys he would get rid of T.O. immediately and ‘put a bullet in him’. Various college football bowl games were highly discussed, the Alamo Bowl between Missouri and Northwestern in particular. No. 11 Georgetown’s win over No. 2 Connecticut in men’s college basketball was also a hot topic. Rounding out the top five was bloggers denouncing N.Y. Post columnist Phil Mushnick’s opinion that Fox’s Howie Long jokingly calling fellow analyst Terry Bradshaw a “scumbag” on the air was inappropriate.

Dallas Cowboys take center stage

Over the weekend, the Dallas Cowboys took center stage on the top sports blogs due to a combination of discussion on their win over the NY Giants as well as backlash from fans and Terrell Owens against ESPN’s Ed Werder for his report about conflict within the Dallas team. Also highly discussed was the Heisman Trophy, awarded over the weekend to Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford, with many bloggers also amused that FoxSports.com initially mistakenly published a story stating that Florida QB Tim Tebow had won the award. Bloggers were perplexed by Auburn’s hire of former Iowa State head coach Gene Chizik as the Tigers’ new head football coach and entertained by Auburn fans’ negative reactions to the hiring. The N.Y. Yankees signing pitcher A.J. Burnett was also popular, with discussion about the amount of money the Yankees are spending on free agent signings continuing following last week’s signing of pitcher CC Sabathia to a record contract.  Rounding out the top five was the Philadelphia 76ers firing head coach Maurice Cheeks.

College football’s crazy finishes push it to top spot

Over the weekend, the most popular topic was college football, in particular Texas Tech’s win over Texas, Florida’s win over Georgia, and several games coming down to the final seconds. The NFL was also popular, especially the Tennessee Titans beating the Packers to remain undefeated, the Giants’ win over the Cowboys, and the Bengals getting their first win of the season. The New York Knicks’ woes involving Stephon Marbury, the fans, and new coach Mike D’Antoni were also highly discussed. A 7 year old Cincinatti fan is gaining blog popularity after being interviewed by ESPN’s Erin Andrews during Thursday’s Cincinatti vs. South Florida game, following receiving a hug from Cincinatti WR Marty Gilyard after Gilyard ran into the young fan in the stands. Rounding out the Top 5 was surprise at Phillies 2B Chase Utley cursing during a World Series celebration in front of thousands of fans.

Rays headed to World Series is talk of the blogs

Over the weekend, the Tampa Bay Rays’ Game 7 win over the Red Sox to advance to the World Series was the most popular topic. Also highly discussed were various NFL topics, including rumors that former Green Bay QB Brett Favre advised the Detroit Lions before their game vs. the Packers, the Cowboys’ loss to the Rams, and the Colts’ loss to the Packers. Discussion of the weekend’s college football games was also popular. The Texas Longhorns’ win over Missouri to hold onto their #1 ranking and the first BCS rankings were hot college football topics as well as a video that popped up on many blogs from the South Carolina-LSU game in which a referee ran into SC QB Stephen Garcia, with many bloggers speculating (some jokingly), that the referee appeared to hit Garcia on purpose. News that N.Y. Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain was arrested for DUI in Nebraska quickly circulated throughout the blog world to move into the Top 5. Rounding out the Top 5 was discussion surrounding ESPN analyst Lou Holtz’s comments about Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez in which he made an ill-advised comparison to Hitler.

Sorry FOX, no Dodgers-Red Sox for you… Phillies win NLCS most popular topic

Over the last 24 hours, the Phillies winning the NLCS over the Dodgers to advance to the World Series was the most popular topic. Various storylines involving the Dallas Cowboys were also highly discussed, including Adam Jones’ suspension, Tony Romo’s injury, Terrell Owens, and the Roy Williams trade. The disappointing performance of the Red Sox in the ALCS was a popular topic, with bloggers joking that the famous Citgo sign behind Fenway Park catching fire was symbolic of the Red Sox’s play. Discussion about a possible World Series between the Phillies and Rays led bloggers to speculate that that match-up was less than desirable for television ratings when compared to a Dodgers-Red Sox match-up. Rounding out the Top 5 was talk of Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez being upset about not being traded to a more successful team.

Rays’ domination of the Red Sox most popular topic

Over the past 24 hours, the Tampa Bay Rays rose to the top spot in the Top 5 after a big win over the Red Sox to take a 3-1 lead in the ALCS. The indefinite suspension of Dallas Cowboys CB Adam Jones was also highly discussed among bloggers. Rumors are spreading through the blog world that Greek basketball club Olympiacos is preparing to make an offer to Kobe Bryant, though there are conflicting reports about the contract’s value, ranging from $60-83 million. Some bloggers are suspicious of the reliability of the rumor’s source, but generated enough discussion to push into the Top 5. The NLCS continued to be a popular topic as the Phillies are one win away from the World Series. Rounding out the Top 5 was news that Barack Obama’s presidential campaign would feature ads in the popular football video game Madden ’09 in the form of stadium signage and billboards.

Tim McCarver and Manny Ramirez having a war of words through the media

Over the past 24 hours, Fox analyst Tim McCarver’s negative comments about Dodgers LF Manny Ramirez’s behavior with the Boston Red Sox was the most popular topic. Also highly discussed was news that Cowboys DB Adam Jones fought with his bodyguard at a Dallas hotel. Many wondered how this incident would affect Jones’ status with the league given his past troubles. The Chicago Cubs continued their run in the Top 5 after a segment on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart mocked the fans’ dismay over not advancing in the MLB playoffs. N.Y. Giants WR Plaxico Burress moved into the Top 5 with discussion of his suspension and that he allegedly owes over $1,000 for damage to a rental car. Rounding out the Top 5 was the news that Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller, and Marv Albert would serve as game announcers for the outdoors pre-season game between the Pheonix Suns and Denver Nuggets on October 11th.
