Bloggers keep pace with NFL firings

Over the past 24 hours, the firings of various NFL coaches was the most popular topic among the top sports blogs, in particular the firing of NY Jets coach Eric Mangini. The woes of the Dallas Cowboys continued to be a popular topic, especially from bloggers alarmed by comments from ESPN’s Cris Carter on WR Terrell Owens that if Carter ran the Cowboys he would get rid of T.O. immediately and ‘put a bullet in him’. Various college football bowl games were highly discussed, the Alamo Bowl between Missouri and Northwestern in particular. No. 11 Georgetown’s win over No. 2 Connecticut in men’s college basketball was also a hot topic. Rounding out the top five was bloggers denouncing N.Y. Post columnist Phil Mushnick’s opinion that Fox’s Howie Long jokingly calling fellow analyst Terry Bradshaw a “scumbag” on the air was inappropriate.

Also popular was Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis’ appearance on a radio show criticizing coach Jim Zorn’s decision-making. Detroit Lions C Dominic Raiola’s comments regarding Lions fans’ negative attitudes towards the team were also highly discussed. News that Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich allegedly attempted to inappropriately influence the Tribune Company with the sale of the Chicago Cubs caught bloggers’ attention. Rounding out the top five was recently-fired head coach Barry Melrose’s comments that he hopes the Tampa Bay Lightning do not win another game all season.

Did Auburn make right decision on Tuberville? Bloggers not so sure.

Over the past 24 hours, Auburn University firing Tommy Tuberville as head football coach was the most popular topic among the top sport blogs, with the majority of bloggers disagreeing with the decision. The ACC/Big Ten Challenge in college basketball was also highly discussed, especially Duke’s win over Purdue on Tuesday and North Carolina’s win over Michigan State on Wednesday. A video of a blind, over-the-shoulder buzzer beater shot by SUNY Geneseo’s Scott Morton to win a game vs. Oswego State is making the rounds of the sports blogs amazed by the winning bucket. Sean Avery’s comments and ensuing suspension remained in the Top 5, with many thinking the punishment was too harsh. Also re-appearing in the Top 5 was the banned substance-related suspensions of six NFL players and an injunction granted by a Minnesota judge to block the suspension of two Vikings players.

Sean Avery’s dig at another NHL-er propels him to the top of the blogs

For the third consecutive day NY Giants WR Plaxico Burress was in the Top 5 for gun charges stemming from a self-inflicted gun shot wound. University of Southern California head football coach Pete Carroll raised the eyebrows of some bloggers after it was announced that the Trojans would forfeit two timeouts in Saturday’s game versus UCLA in order to wear their home colored jerseys in spite of being the visiting team. Charlie Weis also kept his place in the Top 5 after Notre Dame announced that Weis would remain the head football coach. Rounding out the Top 5 was discussion surrounding suspensions for six NFL players after they tested positive for a banned diuretic substance.

MNF overtakes Plaxico Burress…. sort of.

Over the past 24 hours, Monday Night Football was the most popular topic, though as much for the halftime interview with agent Drew Rosenhaus (who represents Giants WR Plaxico Burress, among others) as for Houston’s win over Jacksonville. Burress facing gun charges remained a popular topic, with many wondering whether Burress will end up serving jail time. News that the student who serves as Penn State’s Nittany Lion mascot was charged with DUI Saturday was an area of amusement for bloggers. Debate and speculation surrounding Notre Dame head football coach Charlie Weis’ future continued to grow. Rounding out the Top 5 was cyclist Lance Armstrong’s announcement that he will compete in the 2009 Tour de France race.

Over the weekend, Giants WR Plaxico Burress accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a New York nightclub and subsequently facing charges was the most popular topic among the top sports blogs. The weekend’s college football action was also highly discussed, especially Oklahoma’s win over Oklahoma, Oregon’s win over Oregon State, Sylvester Croom resigning as head coach at Mississippi State, and Alabama and Florida both winning over their rivals, Auburn and Florida State, respectively. The brewing BCS controversy also remained popular. Bloggers are debating whether Oklahoma deserved to be ranked ahead of Texas in the BCS standings, thus breaking the Big 12 South tie and awarding Oklahoma the berth in the Big 12 Championship Game. The Thanksgiving weekend’s NFL games were also highly discussed, especially the Vikings’ win over the Bears and the Giants win over the Redskins. Rounding out the Top 5 was discussion about Charles Barkley’s negative comments regarding LeBron James and Stephen A. Smith.

Pssst…double-teaming Stephen Curry the whole game may not work out, but does make people talk about you

Over the past 24 hours, college basketball was the most popular topic among the most influential sports blogs. Areas of discussion included the Maui Invitational tournament, Syracuse’s upset wins over Florida and Kansas, and Loyola (Md.) using double teams on Davidson PG Stephen Curry to hold him to zero points, but still losing the game by 30 partially due to the resulting mismatch of the other four Davidson players to Loyola’s three. The Cleveland Cavaliers playing at the New York Knicks sparked conversation about Cavs F LeBron James going to the Knicks when he potentially becomes a free agent in 2010. Ball State finishing the regular season undefeated at 12-0 with a win over Western Michigan, with many lamenting that Ball State would not get any BCS recognition. Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, two pitchers from India signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates, remained in the Top 5 for a second consecutive day following a discovery that the two players have a blog. Rounding out the Top 5 was amusement over two Iowa fans caught engaging in sexual activity in a bathroom stall at the Metrodome during Saturday’s game between Iowa and Minnesota.
