Blog In-Depth: ESPN bids for BCS television rights

Buzz Manager™ analyzed online discussion surrounding ESPN’s efforts to acquire the television rights to all the Bowl Championship Series games.

The Buzz ranked 7 out of 10, a topic of a high level of interest among sports bloggers.

–     Bloggers in the Positive category (34%) are hoping ESPN wins the bid. They have not been pleased with FOX’s coverage of the BCS, particularly the commentators and production. Given that FOX airs no regular season college games, these fans would prefer to see the BCS games on a more familiar platform, with announcers and analysts they have watched all season. Fans were not necessarily happy that the games would be on ESPN in particular, just pleased that they would no longer be aired by FOX.

–     Bloggers in the Negative category (45%) expressed concern that households without cable would not be able to view the games if they aired on ESPN, suggesting that the games should air on the ABC platform for greater accessibility. Some saw ESPN’s bid for the BCS as extremely hypocritical. ESPN on-air personalities and analysts have repeatedly criticized the BCS system for determining a college football champion, yet ESPN as a corporation still wants to profit from it and further raise the financial value of the BCS by offering almost double what FOX paid for the rights in the current deal. Some also voiced a concern about ESPN in general, that there’s a conflict of interest for the entity creating the news to also be the entity to report on it. Others are opposed to a new BCS deal with any network, because it further lessens the chances for a playoff system.

–     Bloggers in the Neutral category (21%) mentioned that ESPN had made the offer and wrote more about the actual particulars of the bid and competing offers.
