Over the past 24 hours, swimming was the most popular Olympic topic, urged on by the continued success of Michael Phelps and the U.S. men’s 4×100m relay team’s upset win over France. an Olympics-related advertisement in Spain’s best-selling newspaper picturing Spain’s basketball team pulling on the corners of their eyes was also a popular point of discussion, with many questioning the ad’s appropriateness and whether or not the host country, China, would find it offensive. The U.S. men’s basketball team continued to be a highly discussed topic. Television-related topics rounded out the Top 5. One such topic was what one blogger called fakery in the broadcast of the Opening Ceremonies. Specifically, using computer-generated images for some of the fireworks that did not show up well on video and a young girl seen on screen singing was actually lip-synching to the voice of another young girl that organizers reportedly did not feel was attractive enough to represent the country on television. The final Top 5 Topic was NBC’s coverage of the Olympics, particularly the delaying of certain events and whether or not things were actually “Live” at some points.
